Mike and Rachael — how we met

Chapter One

How We Met

What started as a simple text turned into something neither of us could have planned. From the very first message, our conversation felt effortless—like we had somehow skipped the small talk and gone straight to something real. We didn’t rush it. Instead, we took our time, learning each other’s stories, sharing pieces of our lives, and building something meaningful before we had ever met in person.

Chapter Two

Our First Date

Nearly a month after our story began, we finally met in person, both wondering if a connection this effortless could truly be as real as it felt.

We chose a cozy neighborhood wine bar. She had come from a work event, so I dressed to match. The moment she entered the room, everything else disappeared, and somehow, in a place full of people, it felt like it was just the two of us.

Time slipped away without either of us noticing. We talked, laughed, and lingered until the staff began closing around us. And even then, neither of us was ready for the night to end. We stepped outside and stayed there for what felt like hours longer, wrapped up in conversation, completely unaware of anything but each other.

Chapter Three

Growing Together

Over the years, our relationship grew into something even more beautiful than we had imagined—not just a love story, but a true friendship. Through countless adventures, unforgettable trips, work events that became memories of our own, and long conversations that somehow stretched for hours without ever feeling long enough, we built a life filled with laughter, comfort, and connection.

No matter where life took us, we became each other’s constant—celebrating the best moments side by side and holding each other through the hardest ones. Somewhere along the way, we realized we hadn’t just fallen in love… we had found our best friend in each other.

Chapter Four

Building a Life

As our love grew, so did the life we were building around it. What could have felt complicated instead felt effortless, as our families came together with so much warmth and love that it seemed meant to be from the very beginning.

Our daughters embraced one another like sisters almost instantly, and with every family trip, vacation, holiday, and quiet moment in between, our hearts only grew fuller. We realized that love doesn’t divide when shared—it multiplies, creating something far more beautiful than either of us could have imagined alone.

The Proposal

Setting the Scene

One of our favorite traditions had always been a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt—a trail of riddles, memories, and meaningful little moments that told the story of our year together. But this year was different. This time, every stop along the path represented a chapter of our story—how we met, how we fell in love, how we built a life together, and all the moments in between that shaped us into who we had become.

Hidden behind one of the doorways in the house was something I had quietly spent weeks creating just for her: an entire room transformed into a softly lit maze of curtains, photographs, keepsakes, and tiny pieces of our journey collected throughout the years. Every step forward was meant to feel like walking through the memories we had built side by side.

The plan was simple, but deeply personal—she would follow the scavenger hunt to its final destination, make her way through the maze, read the last card waiting at the end… and when she turned around, she would find me there, ready to ask the most important question of my life.
